Compacting the Database
As my database has grown larger, backups and transactions are taking longer to process.
How can I compact the database? I have tried restoring from the backup but there is no change.

Hello hmansheim,
I am sorry that you are having this problem. Can you tell me, do you notice when Checkout is slow ? For example, when entering orders, etc. also is the stock room open at the time it is slow ? How many products do you have ? How many orders a day do you process?
Regards,
Michele

Hi Michele,
Thank you for responding to my issue. This is not a new problem for us, but it seems to have become much worse.
Since the database has grown larger and the problem has become worse, I was hoping compacting the database would re-index and solve the problem.
We are running locally, only one register, database on the same machine.
iMAC - Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.66 GHz, 2GB
MAC OS X 10.6.8
Checkout 3.5.7, Build C3-7786.
We have 560 products in the system, 532 have stock, 365 have 1+ items in stock
The backup file is 150.5mb
The compressed file is 29.9mb
We are a VERY, VERY small operation. We have many days with only 1 - 5 transactions.
Here is an example of what has happened on a big day:
24 transactions through in 1hr 2min.
- Checkout crashed once, we lost the sale information (the next transaction had the same number) there was no record of the original transaction. Had to adjust inventory manually.
- We did all cash transactions by hand and had to enter them later because it took so long to process each one.
I have started closing Checkout and rebooting after about 10 transactions to prevent a crash and lose of data.
I try to only have the transaction window. By running slow I mean all parts of a transaction are slow - New Sale, Choose Product, Checkout, Pay (I have pay set to print automatically, 2 copies to the receipt printer.)
The last part of the transaction was always slow, even before I set it to auto print.
I can have this problem at any point, even if the system has been idle for 15+ min.
Any assistance you can give us would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Helene Mansheim
