Paying with Gift Certificate
How does everyone else handle customers paying with a gift certificate? You can't just put a negative item in the sale because it adds tax (for example a -$20 "item" actually takes $21.65 off the total)

Heres what I do.
I sell the gift certificate as an order for GV (gift voucher- which is a product in my store with no physical stock) and get the customers name who the voucher is for and add that to the order. Customer comes in an chooses their product I simply open the order and delete the GV item and scan what they want. And then hit invoice. Works out well as they often spend more more and its all worked out for me in the one spot.
Only problems with this method is if the person buying the GV demands an receipt that says invoice on it (yet to happen) or people dont say up front that they are buying with a GV and you have to delete the sale and go into orders once they produce a GV.

Hi Kari,
No you can't easily & fast put a negative item in sales but you can create a negative item in the stockroom & just put it as a non tax item.
I call it discount ( I use this to give discounts )

I also am curious to know how to sell gift certificates.
Jonny, how do you get the amount of the gift voucher you already sold to minus off your order total after the customer comes in to redeem it?
Thanks for your help!!
Kristen

You need to sell the gift voucher as a deposit on an order.
Open a new order.
Add customer.
Add a stockless product, I have one called gift voucher.
Edit the price to the gift voucher value.
Hit deposit down the bottom instead of invoice, take the payment.
Hit command + P to print a copy. This is the voucher.
Customer comes in to spend voucher.
Open their order
Scan items
Delete gift voucher item
If the value is equal or greater than the GV, hit invoice.
If not you can just reprint the order and it will show value remaining.
Take any extra payment.
Hope this makes sense. Its actually pretty simple.

Jonny dude!
I'm trying out your method with gift certificates and store credit. I see that the when the person goes over the amount the invoice works great and there's a payment needed to fulfil the sale.
But I still can't figure out what I need to do when the person comes short on the credit or gift certificate. Can you explain it a little more please. Would be appreciated thanks!
