product catagories instead of individual product

I have checkout and want to start using it. What concerns me however with POS systems is the inputting of all the different products. We'd like to know if we could catagorize product groups instead of inputting all individual products. for example: we don't care what greeting card we sell. we just want to know that it was a greeting card we sold. Another example: let's say we sell ceramic pots from three different suppliers - i just want to input the fact that we sold a cermic pot from supplier abc. It doesent really matter exactly which pot.
perhaps I can bring up "ceramic pot supplier abc" and input the price when i sell it if you know what i mean??
any help would be appreciated

    Hi Adam:

I'm sorry that you're having a problem. It sounds like you'd rather have just one product entered into the system rather than entering in each individual product within Checkout.

If that is correct, you could create a non-stocked product for each category you have and adjust the name each time a product is sold. Setting it up this way will save you time in the setup process but may cause issues later down the road depending on what reports you'd like to run and if you need to make purchase orders within Checkout for the product.

I would suggest thinking what type of reports you may need to run to see if this type of setup would be possible for your business.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Andy
