II. Best Practices - Network Setup
Maximum Machines on Your Network
Your Checkout software is capable of having up to 20 Macs on the same network accessing your stores. Please note that each Mac requires its own license.
Suggested Network Setup
While speed is nice to have, it is not necessary. You will want a network that is reliable more than anything. To prevent any loss of data, a wired network, using ethernet cable, is preferred. While you can use a wireless connection, such connections are typically less reliable than wired connections. If you have multiple wireless networks within the same general area, a wireless connection is more prone to have issues. Similarly, if there is just one wireless network, the further from the signal you get, the more prone you are to lose your connection. In terms of tech-speak, latency is more important than bandwidth. Latency is wasted time. The less wasted time your system has communicating with another machine, the better. Bandwidth is the speed at which the data is transferred. Providing the data isn’t ‘waiting’ to be transferred, the speed at which it gets from one location to the other is really irrelevant. For this reason, only local networks are supported. There is no support available for remote connections of any kind. The last thing to remember is that better network hardware will mean better network performance. If you have a great router or hub but you use ethernet cable you found in your garage from 8 years ago, that’s not really an optimal setup. Take the time to be sure that the hardware you are using is setup properly and be sure to test this setup regularly.
