1.3 Philosophy

Checkout focusses on ease of use, simplicity and offering the right features for a majority of retail businesses. Even though it can be used for related tasks, such as time-based billing, Checkout was not designed to be everything to everybody. Instead, our team strives to balance ease of use with offering the best possible set of features. The result of this approach is that memorizing this manual is not needed to learn how to use Checkout effectively.

Some design decisions in Checkout may seem strange at first, but live up to this philosophy. One example is that invoices in Checkout can not be modified or deleted after they have been created. This prevents inconsistencies in Checkout’s bookkeeping records, and thereby a lot of potential worries and hassle down the line. Faulty invoices can instead be corrected by crediting them and making a new invoice. By being more rigid in some cases, Checkout can guarantee that your exported bookkeeping records are always reliable, resulting in less time spent worrying and more time spent selling.

1.4 Recommended Setup

For the best experience running Checkout, we recommend the following setup:

  • Any Intel-based Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard
  • A receipt printer or any Mac OS X compatible printer (e.g. a Star TSP143 Receipt Printer)
  • Any keyboard emulating barcode scanner (e.g. a Symbol LS2208 USB Barcode Scanner)
  • Any cash drawer that works with a Star receipt printer (e.g. an APG Vasario VB32-BL1616)
